The Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors (PS) is a national organization located in Grand Rapids, Michigan serving burn survivors and their families. They accomplish this through a variety of programs and services, most notably their SOAR program and annual World Burn Congress. In recent years, PS has enjoyed increased exposure through World Burn Congress, its various affiliations within the fire services industry and visible involvement and endorsements from high-profile burn survivors, such as JR Martinez. As a result, PS experienced significant increases in the number of people requesting services and support, and have been challenged to meet those needs.

Scope of Work

Philanthropia Partners has worked with PS in a variety of capacities over the past several years, helping advance their capacity and providing thought leadership in several areas, including:

  • Providing planning and strategic facilitation of the PS annual Board of Directors retreat;
  • Assisting with the development of a more comprehensive overall development plan;
  • Assisting with the ideation and execution steps in securing and achieving a challenge gift and required matching dollars;
  • Pivoting and shifting PS approach to corporate giving to include mission elements and a focus on the PS “business” case;
  • Expanding PS corporate relationships beyond the financial realm to include ongoing, comprehensive in-kind support and expertise;
  • Working with PS staff to envision and articulate a preferred future for the organization from within their respective disciplines and focus areas;
  • Engaging with the Board of Directors in advancing PS to embark on a multi-year expansion effort.

This work has been accomplished through facilitated meetings, one-on-one coaching sessions on site as well as at Philanthropia Partners’ offices, and through the use of specific meeting technologies. Deb has interfaced with a variety of team members including the executive director, various board officers, leadership staff and other PS consultants.
